Complemedis has been enabling doctors and therapists and their patients to use high-quality Chinese medicinal products for around 30 years. These are tested for their botanical identity and purity in the Phytax analysis laboratory, which was set up by Complemedis.
Complemedis has focussed on high quality from the very beginning. The key to this is the complete analysis of every single batch. What is taken for granted by patients, namely that remedies used in this country are of high quality, is not a matter of course for the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) range. Although there are official regulations, their enforcement is patchy.
TCM medicines are usually prescribed individually. This means that each patient is prescribed a herbal formulation that is tailored to their individual needs. This takes into account the patient's current complaints as well as their constitution.
Around 12,000 plants are used medicinally in China. Around 500 plants are sufficient to practise TCM properly. These plants were hardly known in Switzerland until the introduction of TCM. Although the prescribing doctor is aware of their effect, he must rely on the importer and distributor of TCM medicines to offer him good quality. As a rule, the authorities check the facilities for processing the prescription - for example hygiene and expiry date - but they know little about the botany of TCM plants. Not all distributors offer complete analysis of their products and there are loopholes in the enforcement of the testing of TCM medicinal products. In addition, products are often ordered online or the goods are brought directly from the Far East in a suitcase. This may provide a financial advantage, but can entail health risks. Such cases are regularly uncovered, which damages the reputation of TCM and the health of the patient.
The specialised team at the Phytax analysis laboratory has analysed tens of thousands of samples over the last 15 years. For Complemedis, it has analysed every batch delivered.
