TCM and conventional medicine

I have to undergo chemotherapy. Is this compatible with TCM prescriptions?

TCM remedies should not be given at the same time as chemotherapy. As a rule of thumb, TCM remedies should be discontinued the day before chemotherapy and only taken again the day after chemotherapy. It may be handled differently in individual cases. The TCM specialist who wrote your prescription will be able to advise you. Please contact them.

I have breast cancer, can I take cordyceps?

No, cordyceps should not be taken for breast cancer because it promotes hormones that are not desirable in hormone-dependent breast cancer.

I am taking immunosuppressants because I had a transplant (liver, kidney...). Can I take medicinal mushrooms?

It is recommended that patients who have had a transplant (liver, kidney, etc.) or whose immune system is suppressed for other reasons should not take medicinal mushrooms.

I am undergoing therapy with interferon. Is this compatible with TCM medication?

There are indications in the specialised press that interferon is not compatible with all TCM herbs, e.g. not with Minor Bupleurum Combination (Xiao Chai Hu Tang).

Is my herbal mixture compatible with contrast agents?

Contrast media can place a heavy short-term strain on the body, e.g. the kidneys. We advise you to refrain from taking TCM herbal formulations for a short time, i.e. a few days before and after a contrast agent examination.

I suffer from a thyroid disorder. Is this compatible with TCM remedies?

In TCM there are some remedies that contain iodine in large quantities, for example algae. These can interfere with conventional medical treatment. The TCM specialist knows this and will be aware of this when you tell them what type of thyroid disease you have.

I have a damaged kidney. Can I take TCM remedies?

Impaired kidney function cannot tolerate a lot of potassium. Your TCM specialist knows how to take this into account.

Can I take conventional medicine and granules together?

It can happen that these interfere with each other. As a rule of thumb, the granules should be taken at a sufficient distance from the conventional medicine (2-4 hours). Show your prescribing TCM specialist your conventional medication so that they can assess whether it works together.

Which conventional medicines interfere with the effect of granules?

Gastric acid blockers, drugs that affect immunity (in the case of transplants), anticancer drugs, thyroid medication, blood thinners and cortisone are the drugs that are most likely to cause problems in conjunction with TCM medicines. Complemedis organises courses for TCM specialists to teach them how to use them safely.

I take blood thinners. Do TCM remedies interfere with these?

In TCM there are a few remedies which, in Chinese jargon, 'move the blood'. Such remedies can possibly enhance the effect of conventional blood thinners. This can be measured with some, but not all conventional medical remedies. A certain degree of caution is warranted, even if there are hardly any reports of adverse events.
